HANDBOOK

Your Training Companion from White Belt to Black Belt & Beyond

The SHMA Student Handbook — Hardcopy Book Coming January  2027  (See our Website Shop to order) contains the information students need to learn, understand, practise and complete the requirements throughout their martial arts journey, including: Technical Syllabus • Korean Terminology • Martial Arts Knowledge • Theory • Grading Information • Training Guidance • and lots more!

The Handbook is not something to leave at home and open only in the days before a Grading. It has been designed to become a working training companion that students use throughout their SHMA journey. Students are encouraged to bring their Handbook to class. During appropriate break times, they can look through their syllabus, check terminology, review something they have been learning or add notes from that day's training.

Instructors will often give a student an individual correction or reminder during class. Writing it down helps the student remember exactly what they need to work on when practising away from the Dojang. For example: “Keep my hand in chamber” • “Check my stance” • “Rotate my supporting foot” • “Turn my hips more” • “Keep my guard up” • “Slow my Hyung down”. These may appear to be small details, but very often they are the specific points an Instructor has repeatedly asked that individual student to improve.

We want students to write in it! Add notes. Highlight important information. Record Instructor feedback. Mark the techniques that need more practice. Write down something new that you learned in class. When practising at home, those notes can remind you of the corrections your Instructor gave you rather than returning to your next class having forgotten what you were asked to work on. As students become older and progress through the grades, using their Handbook also encourages them to take greater responsibility for their own learning, practice and development.
